This CD-ROM Demo version of PageSentry will expire after processing a total of 100 server tests. Please visit our Web site at http://www.maxum.com/ for up to date product information, pricing, ordering and a longer lasting, time-limited demonstration version.
QuickStart
To install PageSentry, simply copy the PageSentry application to your hard disk. You may want to copy the entire PageSentry disk for easy access to the online User's Guide, example AppleScript applications, etc.
Before starting PageSentry, verify that Open Transport (or MacTCP) has been properly installed and that the computer has a dedicated network connection. A dedicated connection is technically not required for PageSentry to operate, but without it PageSentry may be unable to connect to your Internet servers at any time of the day or night and may incorrectly report an error.
To get started, simply double-click the PageSentry icon to launch the application.
In addition to the printed User's Guide, an electronic version of the PageSentry User's Guide is provided in HTML form. To read the guide, select "Open File..." from the "File" menu of your Web browser and locate and open the folder "PS User's Guide". Choose the "PS00Contents.html" file and click OK.

New In Version 2.5
Many features and changes have been made to PageSentry 2.5. The internal workings of PageSentry have been updated to correct bugs, smooth processing, and expand support for the wide range of servers available. Other notable changes include:
• New PageNow and PowerKey Notifiers provide built-in paging
and power restart support.
• Sentries can now be created to test AppleShare servers, perform
simple "Pings", and test unknown "Stream" based TCP/IP servers.
• Notification messages are now completely configurable.
• The SMTP Sentry can now skip the "VRFY" test, allowing testing
of servers that don't support the "VRFY" command.
• Rewrite and modernized the User Interface.
• Added options for reducing frequency of status window updates,
synchronizing Sentry schedules, and prompting users before
quitting PageSentry.
• Added a "Persistent Notices" option to Notifiers so that
notifications can be periodically repeated until the server
returns to service.
• Added better warning messages, particularly under
low-memory conditions.
• All Sentries can now be placed either on or off duty
simultaneously.
• PageSentry now uses an optimized thread scheduler for
improved performance.
• HTTP Proxy servers are supported for either testing the proxy
or servers reached through the proxy.
• Added an option to use local date formats in log files.
• Added a backup mail server, used when mail notification can't
be completed through the defined primary mail server.
MacTCP Usage Note
If you are using PageSentry on a machine running MacTCP, please note that in some cases where connections cannot be quickly established, PageSentry may appear to hang. In reality, PageSentry is simply attempting to establish a connection with the tested server. If the connection attempt fails, a time out will occur and be correctly reported.
In other words, if your Macintosh appears to freeze, be sure to give PageSentry enough time to timeout and report the error. Be patient, PageSentry is on the job!
